Raising a glass to sustainability at the Footprint Awards 2020

Congratulations to all the winners at yesterday’s Footprint Awards 2020!

The postponed ceremony was held as a live virtual event due to lockdown but that didn’t stop host Mark Durden-Smith and Footprint Media Group CEOs Charlie Miers and Nick Fenwicke-Clennell donning their dinner suits to dish out 11 awards recognising sustainability and responsible business practice in the foodservice sector.

Kicking off the event, Fenwicke-Clennell said: “Tonight is about getting together again and celebrating this fantastic industry’s resilience, grit and determination. It’s also a recognition of excellence and any thoughts that the 2020 hiatus would put sustainability on the back burner has proved to be very short-sighted. In our work last year with some of the most senior industry leaders in the Responsible Business Recovery Forum, it had become very clear by the summer that the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) agenda was more important than ever.”

There was nothing virtual about the glasses of fizz being raised in tribute to the winners and nominees as companies including Brakes, Synergy Grill and 918 Coffee, whose initiative involves using waste coffee grounds to power coffee bean roasting, were toasted by the audience watching the streamed event.

Kate Nicholls, CEO of UKHospitality, received the Special Achievement Award for outstanding contribution to the sector in recognition of her tireless work on behalf of the hospitality industry. Accepting the award, she said: It’s been a huge team effort so I am really proud to accept this on behalf of my really hardworking team who’ve been behind me all the way through the last 14 months as we battled coronavirus and taken on all the other big challenges the industry has faced across the sustainability agenda.”

At least two Hubbies admitted to wearing slippers for the ceremony. Could this trend catch on when live events resume in person?
