Ei Awards for Excellence
We’re all for celebrating success here at The Hub, and rather partial to a pub or two, too, so we were delighted to attend the inaugural Ei Awards for Excellence this July with client Ei Group.
Held at the beautiful Coombe Abbey in Warwickshire, the awards recognise the achievements of publicans across the Ei Group estate, with nominees in categories including Pub of the Year, Best Community Hub, Best Sports Venue, Best Food Venue and not one, but two Lifetime Achievement Awards!
After a very lively drinks reception sponsored by Heineken UK, Molson Coors UK and Diageo, guests were treated to a three-course feast, before host Mark-Durden-Smith took to the stage to introduce Simon Townsend, Ei Group chief executive, who officially kicked off an evening of celebration by thanking gathered guests for their hard work and dedication to both their businesses and the wider pub industry.
Scooping Ei Group Pub of the Year was The Lion Hotel in Trechorchy, Wales. At the helm of this thriving pub is Adrian Emmett, who was praised for ‘sheer passion and commitment for not only his pub but for his community’ by the award judges. The Lion which was once boarded up and neglected, is now a much-loved community hub, and business is thriving…we certainly can’t wait to visit!
There were surprises on the night too…with stiff competition in the Lifetime Achievement Award category, the judges decided to honour the title to both Michael and Janet Ostler, The Red Cow Inn, Knoll, and Andrew Scott, Crown & Trumpet Inn, Broadway.
Michael and Janet were unable to attend on the night itself, but the award was collected by their children, who not only work, but grew up in the pub. The pair paid homage to Mum and Dad, explaining their passion for the pub and its punters.
Andrew is about to celebrate his 35th year at the Crown & Trumpet and remains as committed to his business as he was on his first day. Judges praised him for being a ‘positive, polite, approachable and a perfect gentleman.’
Simon Townsend, Ei Group chief executive explained; “Judging our new awards scheme was not an easy task.
“We saw an impressive number of entries and our group of expert judges were struck by the extraordinary levels of dedication and passion to the industry demonstrated by every single publican that entered.
“Our new awards programme has offered us the opportunity to celebrate the most outstanding operators across our estate, learn from the best and inspire other publicans to further raise retail standards and business performance. “We are incredibly proud of all of our finalists, and in particular Adrian at the Lion who runs an outstanding pub and is truly a worthy winner.”
