A very ABBA Christmas!
Thursday 12th December, an important date in the 2019 calendar……….the annual Hub Christmas party! The venue: 02 London, Mamma Mia The Party (and what a party it was!). The dress code: sequins…..
Themed to make guests feel they are walking into a Taverna in the heart of Greece, where it was claimed the first Mamma Mia film had been recorded. On arrival we were led to our tables on the balcony overlooking the main square, where a delicious selection of cold mezze and breads awaited, shortly followed by additional salads and warm mezze – as good as I have tasted anywhere outside of Greece.
Whilst tucking in, a commotion began in the square below, and the show had begun! The story based on the ‘owners’ of ‘taverna’, centred on the denied love between the Greek daughter of the owner and the English bartender, featuring, you guessed it, the songs of that famous Swedish quartet – ABBA!
Interspersed with laughter, singing, dancing (including the wait staff) and even acrobatics the rest of the delightful meal consisted of traditional lamb kleftiko, tender beef and tasty sides, finished with a sweet and sticky orange cake. For such a big event, some days hosting two performances, the food really was a great highlight. This was not theatrical performance with ok food, it was a totally immersive and delicious dining experience.
Impossible to stay seated, no ABBA show would be complete without a stage display in full flares and feather boas. The finale performance (once a fair amount of alcohol had been consumed) had everyone on their feet, singing and swaying along – Dancing Queen or not.
Thanks Mamma Mia The Party for a fabulous Christmas celebration, definitely up there as one of the best ever!
